カリフォルニアにあるスタンフォード線形加速器センターにおいて高エネルギー実験BABARに従事した後、計算機科学に転じる。現在は理化学研究所・計算科学研究センターにて様々な HPC ツールの研究開発（特に Scalasca）及び、京コンピュータ上でのアプリケーション性能評価に取り組んでいる。千葉工業大学 STAIR ラボでは計算論的神経科学を研究しており、特にドイツ・ユーリッヒスーパーコンピューティングセンターの JURON を利用し GPU によるブレインシミュレータ（NEST）の高度化を研究中。

Prior to coming to the High Performance Computing research, Itaru Kitayama has worked on a High Energy Physics experiment called BABAR at SLAC in California as a member of the collaboration. Currently he’s been involved in an R&D of a broader range of HPC tools, especially Scalasca and also a study of performance profiling of applications on K computer at RIKEN R-CCS. At STAIR, his main research focus is Computational Neuroscience; using the JURON pilot system at Juelich Supercomputing Centre in Germany, working on GPU acceleration of a brain simulator called NEST within an international collaboration group.
He holds a master’s degree in Physics from the University of Texas at Dallas.
